DAG / parallel
- Narwhal + Bullshark (Sui, Aleo). Mempool as DAG, ordering separately. Enables parallel execution.
- Hedera Hashgraph. Gossip-about-gossip.
Hybrid / optimized
- Solana Proof of History. Verifiable clock + Tower BFT. Sub-second slots.
- Solana Alpenglow (2025). Next-gen consensus reducing finality to ~150ms.
- Avalanche. Repeated subsample voting; fast probabilistic finality.
Delegated (DPoS)
- EOS, Tron. Token holders vote for a small set of block producers.
What each optimizes for
- PoW: maximum decentralization, worst throughput.
- PoS Gasper: balance between decentralization and speed.
- BFT (Tendermint, HotStuff): instant finality, needs small validator set.
- DAG / DPoS: highest throughput, most centralization risk.
