Six August Deadlines That Can Strand Your Tokens If You Miss Them

MultiversX upgrades August 6, Hashdex stops trading its Bitcoin ETF August 17, LayerZero winds down a chain around August 24, Zano runs Hard Fork 6 between August 25 and 27, and BitMart shuts trading August 26. Every one has an action deadline attached.

August 2026 is stacked with infrastructure events rather than launches. Network upgrades, a fund liquidation, a chain wind-down and an exchange shutdown all land within three weeks of each other. None of them will move the market. Every one of them can cost you money if you hold the affected asset and do nothing.

This is the category of risk that portfolio dashboards handle worst. Price risk is visible. Deadline risk is invisible until the deadline passes.

August 6: MultiversX Mainnet Upgrade

EGLD's mainnet upgrade lands first. Network upgrades of this type are generally non-events for holders using standard wallets, because the change happens at the protocol layer and clients follow automatically.

The exceptions are worth checking. If you run your own node, it needs updating before the fork height. If you hold EGLD on a smaller exchange, deposits and withdrawals typically pause around the upgrade window, and some venues suspend for longer than announced. If you have EGLD locked in a staking or delegation contract, confirm the operator has communicated an upgrade plan.

August 17: Hashdex Bitcoin ETF Stops Trading

Hashdex announced on August 3 that it is closing and liquidating the Hashdex Bitcoin ETF, ticker DEFI, which held approximately $14.7 million as of July 30. Trading ends August 17. The fund then sells its Bitcoin and distributes cash to shareholders later in the month.

Two paths, both with consequences:

In most jurisdictions both are taxable disposals. Liquidation is not a rollover into another fund. If the intent was continuous Bitcoin exposure, the reinvestment has to be made deliberately or there will be a gap.

Around August 24: LayerZero Chain Wind-Down

LayerZero is winding down support for one of its connected chains around August 24. Anyone holding bridged assets that depend on that pathway needs to move before the deadline rather than after.

This is the single highest-consequence item on the list. Bridged token positions are claims against a bridge contract. When the pathway closes, the claim may become difficult or impossible to redeem through the normal interface, and recovery moves from a two-click transaction to a support ticket. The practical step is to enumerate any wrapped or bridged balances on affected routes and unwind them well before the date, not on it, because gas and bridge congestion spike at deadlines.

August 25 to 27: Zano Hard Fork 6

Zano executes Hard Fork 6 across a three-day window. Hard forks require wallet software updates. A wallet running pre-fork software after activation will either fail to sync or follow an abandoned chain, and neither state is comfortable to debug with funds inside.

Update before the window opens, not during it. Verify the wallet version against the official release rather than an aggregator listing.

August 26: BitMart Trading Shutdown

BitMart shuts down trading on August 26. This is the item with the hardest deadline on the list, because an exchange that stops trading typically stops withdrawals shortly afterward, and the gap between those two dates is where assets get stranded.

If you hold anything on BitMart:

Also on the Calendar

The Across Protocol ACX Exchange Portal is expected to go live during the month, and the CLARITY Act faces its real Senate deadline on August 7, the last working day before recess, with the window effectively closing around August 10. Congressional prediction markets put passage odds before year-end at 30% to 38%.

August 2026 is a month about infrastructure and consolidation rather than new launches. Upgrades that make integration easier, funds that close because they never reached scale, and venues that shut because the volume did not arrive.

The Practical Checklist

The positions that get lost in months like this are almost never the large ones. They are the forgotten balances on the third exchange and the bridged token from a farm that stopped paying two years ago. A portfolio you can enumerate completely is one you can defend against a calendar. One you cannot enumerate is one where these dates pass silently.
