BNY Is Putting $8.6 Trillion in Fund Records On a Blockchain, Keeping the Old Rails Anyway

Jul 30, 2026ETHBTCtokenizationinstitutionaltradfirwa
The 242-year-old bank is quietly rebuilding the plumbing behind 7.6 million fund accounts on-chain, with BlackRock and Baillie Gifford as anchor clients.

BNY, custodian of more than $59 trillion in assets, is moving the record-keeping for its $8.6 trillion transfer agency business onto blockchain rails. The unit services 7.6 million fund accounts and now becomes the largest traditional-finance venue anywhere to run investor ownership records natively on-chain.

The announcement, made on July 29, 2026, does not describe a pilot. It describes a production system already booking clients. Baillie Gifford, which manages roughly $261 billion, will use the platform for what BNY calls the first fully native, U.K.-regulated tokenized fund. BlackRock and BNY's own Dreyfus money-market unit are queued up behind it with tokenized products of their own.

What a transfer agent actually does

Transfer agency is the least glamorous corner of asset management and one of the most expensive. Every handoff between transfer agent, fund administrator, custodian, and broker is a message that has to be sent, matched, and settled. In aggregate, the industry spends billions a year on the reconciliation layer alone.

Putting the ownership register on a shared ledger collapses most of that. If BNY, BlackRock, and the broker are all reading from the same on-chain source of truth, there is nothing to reconcile.

The hybrid, not the revolution

The legacy transfer agent is not being shut down. Two ledgers, one bank, both running for the foreseeable future.

Why the client list matters more than the tech

Baillie Gifford is not a fintech. It is a 118-year-old Edinburgh partnership. BlackRock already runs BUIDL, its own tokenized money-market fund. The Dreyfus inclusion is quieter but arguably the most consequential.

What to watch

Whether the tokenized funds that go live under this platform report meaningfully lower operating expense ratios than their traditional twins. Which chain or chains BNY ends up settling on for the register of record. Whether U.S. regulators formalize guidance for on-chain transfer agency.
