Bitcoin Holds $60K as Treasury Yields Hit 19-Year High and ETFs Extend Inflow Streak

Bitcoin entered August 2026 on firmer footing, holding the $60,000 support level even as the macro backdrop grew more hostile. On August 2, spot Bitcoin ETFs closed a fourth consecutive session of net inflows totaling $132 million, a modest but symbolically important reversal after weeks of institutional retrenchment. The move came against a Treasury market that continues to tighten financial conditions, with the 30-year yield touching 5.274%, its highest reading in 19 years.

Price action and technical structure

Bitcoin has recovered roughly 12% from its 2026 low, with the 200-week moving average near $60,000 acting as the primary defense line. The chart now sets up a two-sided battle: bulls need a clean break above the 50-day simple moving average to build momentum toward the $80,000 zone, while a failure at current support would open the path back toward the low reached earlier in the year.

Derivatives markets reflect cautious optimism rather than aggressive positioning. Bitcoin futures open interest rose to approximately $47.6 billion, up from $44 billion a month earlier, and funding rates turned modestly positive across major venues. That combination suggests directional conviction is returning without the leverage excesses that typically precede sharp liquidation cascades.

Institutional ownership continues to concentrate

The ownership structure of Bitcoin has shifted materially. According to data compiled for the August 2 session:

Cumulative net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs since launch have surpassed $53 billion, more than triple the upper-bound estimates published before their approval. The current $132 million four-day streak is small relative to that base, but it snaps a pattern of choppy, mostly negative flows that dominated July.

The macro headwind: yields, dollar, and the Fed

The rate environment remains the single largest constraint on Bitcoin's upside. The Federal Reserve held its policy rate at 3.5% to 3.75% at its most recent meeting, but the vote included three dissents in favor of a hike. Rate futures now price a September hike probability near 66%, a meaningful hawkish repricing that has propagated straight through the Treasury curve.

The 10-year yield sits near 4.743%. The 30-year printed 5.274%, a level not seen since 2007. A $44 billion seven-year Treasury auction cleared at 4.473%, up 21.3 basis points from the June equivalent, indicating that primary dealers are demanding meaningfully higher compensation to absorb duration. Each incremental basis point in real yields raises the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset like Bitcoin and reinforces dollar strength, both of which have historically capped crypto rallies.

Higher real rates raise the opportunity cost of holding BTC, support the dollar, and reduce the balance sheet capacity available for risk assets.

Gold, dollar, and the store-of-value trade

The competition for institutional store-of-value allocations continues to run in gold's favor on a year-to-date basis, with the metal outperforming Bitcoin across most of 2026. Analysts tracking allocator behavior note that the marginal dollar seeking inflation and debasement protection has favored gold's lower volatility profile, particularly as long-duration yields have signaled fiscal stress. Any sustained rotation from gold into Bitcoin would require either a decisive Fed pivot or a break in the current yield regime.

Regulatory tailwind in progress

The CLARITY Act has advanced through both the House and the Senate Banking Committee, moving closer to establishing a defined regulatory perimeter for digital assets in the United States. A codified framework would reduce the compliance overhead that has kept several large asset managers from expanding beyond spot ETF wrappers.

What to watch next

Three variables will determine whether the current base holds:

For now, Bitcoin is holding technical support against a genuinely restrictive macro backdrop, and institutional flows have stopped bleeding. That is a stabilization, not a reversal.
