The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.50% to 3.75% for a fifth consecutive meeting on July 29, 2026, but the interesting number was 9-3. Three regional Fed presidents, Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan, dissented in favor of a 25 basis point hike. That is the first time since 2016 that three hawkish dissents landed in the same meeting.
The Fed decision and what dissent means
A 9-3 outcome, with all three dissents on the hawkish side, is a signal that a meaningful faction inside the FOMC believes the current policy stance is too accommodative given still sticky services inflation. Hammack, Kashkari, and Logan collectively represent the Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Dallas Feds.
The 48 hour price path
Bitcoin steadied above $64,000, the ETF flows turned positive for the first time in several sessions, and altcoins started to recover. By July 31, Bitcoin was at $65,023.82 and the DeFi index was up 2.6% on the day. Ethereum, meanwhile, continued to underperform, opening at $1,917.16 and slipping to $1,877.52 by mid morning New York time.
The ETH underperformance is the story
The most interesting number in the batch is the Bitcoin ETH ratio. Bitcoin gained 2.09% on July 31. Ethereum lost ground on the same day. That is a continuation of a trend that has been running for most of 2026: capital that wants crypto beta is expressing it through Bitcoin.
What to watch
The sustained direction of spot Bitcoin ETF flows. The BTC ETH ratio. How loud the three dissenting Fed presidents get in public appearances.
